Taking Action

Why must faith and ethnic communities speak out and take action to address racism in our nation and communities?

Faith and ethnic communities hold particular sway in our nation, bringing a moral imperative to create change and a voice that matters.

What can faith and ethnic communities do to help dismantle racism?

  • White Christian communities must use their privilege to lift up and strengthen the voices and power of Black communities as well as other communities impacted by racism.
  • Speak out on public policies that address or perpetuate racism at the local, state, and federal level.
  • Collaborate and take action together to change public policy at the local, state, and federal level to address racism. Actions could include letters to the editor, petitions, lobbying, rallies, marches, and more.
  • Support, publicize, and attend marches, rallies, and vigils led by Black leaders, as well as events supporting other communities impacted by racism.
  • Support Black organizations and businesses as well as other communities impacted by racism.
  • Partner together to build relationships and create opportunities for conversation, community service, justice actions, etc.
  • Organize or attend trainings on how to challenge racism and discrimination and how to intervene effectively.

Shattering the Silence

On October 18, Iowans gathered at the Shattering Silence sculpture at the Judicial Building in Des Moines and simultaneously at Mays Island in Cedar Rapids. People of faith and all beliefs from predominantly white faith communities shattering their own silence and calling themselves into the work of dismantling systemic racism. Each person declaring openly and loudly to no longer remain silent while Black sisters and brothers and siblings struggle for racial justice and equity. Standing alongside the Black community to Shatter the Silence and use the privilege given to the white community to amplify Black voices. As people of faith and all beliefs, committing to no longer remaining silent.

The current Taking Action focus through the Shattering the Silence event is dismantling the systemic racism within the criminal justice system. Learn more by connecting with faith organizations in Iowa.
